IT'S ALLIIIIIIIIVE!

The other day, I got an email from someone asking me about this blog- is this the real Kaboom? Is there a reason I don't post much here?

First off, yes, I am Kaboom, the one and only. And the reason I don't post much here is because my main personal blogs are on InsaneJournal and Tumblr, and most of my fic gets posted at AO3 or FIMFiction these days, and it's kind of dead over here. But over the next few months I'll be moving some old fics over here and putting some new ones up too, so. Yep.

Some news

Alright, I can't believe I'm doing this, since I already have way too many blogs, but I thought I was going to be able to put up with Livejournal's new commenting system. Long story short, it's driving me absolutely berserk, so I'm mostly closing down the old Eljay and moving over here and to tumblr. After I went to all the trouble to migrate over there like a decade too late, now I'm moving, YET AGAIN.

And somehow, I can't help but feel like this is incredibly arrogant of me, thinking that anyone actually wants to read my shitty fic, and that they'll be arsed to follow me over here, or to tumblr, or to AO3, or even to FFnet, where I've been since I was in middle school. But whatever. I like blogs. Blogs are fun. Maybe someday I'll even consolidate my blogs.

I have no idea what I'm talking about anymore. That's usually a sign it's time for me to go to bed.

Fic: Give the Cat a Bath

Give the Cat a Bath
Fandom: Tron
Rating: PG-13 (possibly R, but I really don't think it needs to be that high)
Pairing: Sam/Rinzler
Warnings: Nothing blatant, although it does hint towards previous less-than-consensual situations. Oh, and pseudo-kitty!Rinzler, although I'm not sure that counts.

Disclaimer: Nope. Not mine. Everything belongs to the Mouse, not to me.

Summary: Written for the “washing/cleaning” square on my bingo card. Sam thought washing a legit cat was hard. That was before he tried to get Rinzler to bathe.

Poor Nozomu. Everyone's favorite depressed high school teacher just can't catch a break, even when he's fapping. And that's pretty much what this fic is- Nozomu faps, Jun barges in on him not realizing that he was the subject of his teacher's fap fantasy! I will say this- the last line of this fic is one of the funniest things I've ever read and was the perfect way to end this particular story.

[I succeeded in crawling into the breast of my big boss!]
Fandom: I am Maru
Category: Gen
Rating: low PG-13

If you're on the Internet and don't know Maru, then what the fuck are you doing? Get your ass to Youtube! This story is very clever, written from the point of view of Maru's cat toys (and a pot of cat-grass that has a rather salty vocabulary). Everyone should read this fic, it's wonderfully hilarious. And I just wanted to hug poor Harry the Hedgehog, only wanting to be played with by the boss (Maru). While the title and this summary sound like it could be going one way, I can assure you that it's not- it's simply a funny explanation of what the things Maru chews on think about their boss and what happens when one of them gets into danger. In fact, if it wasn't for the cat-grass's language this would make a perfect picture book for young readers.

Asgardian Feasts vs. The Hiccups
Fandom: Thor
Category: Gen
Rating: PG

Baby Loki can't control his magic, and every time he gets the hiccups, chaos ensues. This is so adorable I could barely contain myself- even as a baby he was a prankster, turning the food alive and turning the mead into various nasty liquids. Normally it would probably piss everyone off to see their food explode right in front of them, but really, who can stay mad at a baby? :) This fic also has two sequels- Asgardian Warriors vs. The Hiccups and Avengers vs. The Hiccups, both of which are also PG rated.

A Distraction of Planetary Proportions
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot (sort of an Axis Powers Hetalia fusion)
Category: Het
Rating: NC-17/R18/Adult

There truly is everything on the Internet. Rule 34 strikes again- this time, anthropomorphized planet porn. Yes, you read that right- it's kind of a Hetalia fusion- the countries have human forms, so why wouldn't the planets? This fic is male!Vulcan/female!Earth. Het is not my preference for pairings, but the premise intrigued me so I checked it out, and I ended up being very impressed with this fic, even though the premise is pretty cracky. I just can't get over how clever this idea was, and how much I enjoyed it.

Multi-Chapter Fics

Macintosh
Fandom: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Category: Gen
Rating: PG
Completion Status: 19 chapters, completed

One thing I'm constantly surprised by is the total overload of great fic in the My Little Pony fandom. It really does seem like the strangest place for excellent, in-depth fanficiton to be, but it really is. This particular fic gets into the head of Big Macintosh, Applejack's older brother, and offers a very believable, heartbreaking explanation for his actions (admittedly, we do not see too much of him in the series), while chronicling his interactions with the rest of Ponyville. What can I say, I guess I'm just a sucker for well-written My Little Pony fanfiction, especially when it focuses on the minor characters, like Princess Luna or Big Mac.

I Do Believe That You Don't Exist Here
Fandom: Devil May Cry
Category: Gen
Rating: PG-13
Completion Status: 13 chapters, in progress

This really isn't the sort of fic I'd normally rec. It has a few things that I usually can't stand in it- blatant author self-insert, some pretty jarring errors, and what, at times, can seem like incessant moralizing on the part of the author. But don't get me wrong, I'm not coming down on this fic (if I was it wouldn't be on this list). So what makes it able to get away with things that normally would make me write it off? The answer is: because it's damn funny. Real life becoming overrun with video game characters that want to kill the protagonist? Crack fic at its finest. Also, apart from the errors, the author has a very interesting writing style- almost stream of consciousness but not quite.

This is one of the most ridiculous premises ever- programs being loaded into electronic devices so that they can exist IRL. And Zuse gets loaded into a phone. Featuring Sam arguing in public with the phone, snarky commentary, and, uh, literal phone sex. Also featuring tablet!CLU and angry Kevin Flynn. It's a comment fic, and is a little difficult to read in some places due to an HTML error, but it's definitely worth it to see, and it features an incredibly rare pairing, which is always a bonus for me. Even if you don't really like slash, this fic is mostly crack, and has The Douglas's approval.

How To Fail At Flirting
Fandom: Thor
Category: Slash
Rating: PG-13
Notes: Kinda-sorta-incest

So I've seen this movie twice now, and the first time, I forgot to bring my slash hat (which is surprising, usually I can't get the damn thing off). The second time, the slashy potential hit me like someone dropped a piano on my head. How had I missed this? The next day I decided to go look for some fic, and luckily, about 95% of the fandom appears to be slash (with the other 5% Mary-Sue self insert fics, but that doesn't really count in my mind). While some people might find this particular pairing a bit squicky because of the pseudo-incest, this particular fic is a pretty harmless introduction to the fandom, since it's mostly crack (although it still is slash, just... cracky slash, or slashy crack). And now I'm rambling, so I'm going to shut up.

Srs Bizness
Fandom: TRON
Category: Gen
Rating: PG

Damn, this particular rec is just full of kink meme fills... oh well. It's no secret that I enjoy crack fic. It's also no secret that I enjoy image macros, especially LOLcats. I also am quite fond of the TRON fandom. So what do you get when you combine all three of those things into one? Well, duh, you get this fic! Quorra “accidentally” releases LOLcats into the Grid, and Tron doesn't know what to make of them. I especially like the floating text captions that come with the cats, and Tron's reaction to the fact that you can't derezz a LOLcat was just priceless. This fic is perfect for those days you just need some cheering up.

Multi-Chapter Fics

Basic Imprinting
Fandom: Twilight
Category: Slash
Rating: PG-13, with a caveat
Completion Status: 24 chapters, complete, sequel in progress

OK, so there's two caveats with this fic- one, I haven't had time to read the sequel yet, so I can't in good conscience rec that yet, and two, this story is mostly PG-13 rated, and a low PG-13 at that, except for the last chapter, which gets closer to R territory.

Anyway, this isn't usually the type of thing I'd read, but I'm also extremely picky when it comes to Twilight fic (I'll only read slash, for example), and I don't usually like “imprinting” fics, basically because the premise weirds me out in general. But I first started reading this one almost a year ago, but lost my place even though I had been enjoying it. I had all but forgotten about this one, until I stumbled across it again a few weeks ago. This time I was able to read it to the end, and found I really enjoyed it. The thing that's so remarkable about this fic is how good it is at getting into your head and manipulating your emotions. It's not quite angsty, but it's also not exactly the happiest fic ever, so keep that in mind.

Fic Rec: July

I've finally decided what I'm going to do with this journal- fic recs and resource lists. It's not super exciting, but I already have a personal blog at InsaneJournal, and I post fic at FFnet, AO3 and LJ already- do I really need a whole other journal to post it to? For now, the answer is no. That could possibly change in the near future, as I'm considering completely phasing out use of FFnet after I complete Partisanship, but that's a decision I won't have to make until November 2012 (as I'll be finishing that particular fic after the 2012 US Presidential elections).

I have recs dating back to January, but I'm too lazy to copy them over at the moment, so I'll just put the one for July for now. I have to go through and edit the number of chapters on the incomplete fics, and I have the July document readily available.

Anyway, on to the fic recs.

Ponies Discover /co/
Fandom: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Category: Gen
Rating: R

If you can get over the cognitive dissonance that is having a mature-rated fanfiction based on a television program geared towrds young girls, this is definitely worth checking out. Featuring Trollestia, oblivious, indiscreet Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash desperately trying to prove that she is not a lesbian, paranoid Fluttershy, and creeped-out Rarity and Applejack. Be warned, though, for a gen fic based on My Little Pony, of all things, this story contains quite a bit of potentially offensive material, given the premise (uh, duh, 4chan). I'll admit, while I laughed my ass off, there were a few bits that had me cringing slightly. Over all, however, it's very funny and defintely worth a read.

Crup-tion of the Not-So-Innocent
Fandom: Harry Potter
Category: Slash
Rating: NC-17/R18/Adult

What to say about this story... well, I will say that it's certainly a unique twist on a common trope in Harry/Draco fanfiction. And as far as Animagus forms go, I have to say that I've never seen one with a character turning into a crup, a Jack Russel-type magical dog. Also, I literally lol'd when Draco turns to crup!Harry and tells him that he's lucky no one neutered him. Yeah, I'd say that's pretty lucky... anyway, this is an amusing, entertaining fic that I found quite enjoyable, and I had also never heard of the archive this story is posted on before, so I'm hoping I'll be able to find some new things to read here.

In The Event of Accidental Marriage, Please Fill Out Form 27b-6
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Category: Slash
Rating: R

I love “strange alien culture has unexpected faux pas and stuff ensues” types of fics. This is one of them- accidental alien marriage! I made the mistake of reading this one while on my break from work, while I was at Chipotle, and I'm pretty sure I freaked out the other customers by grinning like an idiot. Awkward alien rituals, accidental marriage, and pheremone-induced love confessions. It doesn't get much better than this, folks.

Spherical Objects in Digital Space
Fandom: TRON
Category: Gen
Rating: G

Ever wonder what happened to that orange that got digitized in the first movie? I've seen some pretty funny theories on what happened to it (after a while it got recalled back to the real world, it just sort of rolled around the Grid scaring the crap out of random programs, it got squashed, Sark derezzed it), but never this one. And I have to admit, I quite like this theory- it's cute. And Gibbs' reaction at the end was just priceless- I'd probably freak out if the orange I'd sent into the digital world came back eaten too!

Harry Potter and the Eagle of Truthiness
Fandom: Crossover with Harry Potter and the Colbert Report
Category: Gen
Rating: PG

I honestly don't know why I haven't recced this before, because it's one of my favorite fics ever, but I guess it slipped my mind on the others. The premise is simple: Stephen Colbert as a professor at Hogwarts. This is definitely one fic that you don't want to read in public, unless you really want to freak people out. Actually, I first read this fic a few years ago when I was in high school, on the computer in programming class, and it very nearly got me a disciplinary referral for laughing in class/unauthorized use of the school computers. It's a good thing that the IT people and I were cool, so they left me be as long as I wasn't downloading viruses into the system... anyway. Yeah. It's that funny, that it could make me lose my control in class.

Or Is It Just You?
Fandom: TRON
Category: Slash
Rating: NC-17/R18/Adult

This fic includes a broken air-conditioner, and it's so hot that while I was reading it, I was almost convinced that my own air-conditioner had broken. And then I realized I had accidentally stepped on the button on the surge protecter under my desk and turned it off, effectively cutting off power to my radio, my lamp, and the little fan I keep on my desk to keep my ancient Linux laptop from overheating when I use it, and the sudden increase in temperature was due to the fan turning off. But it was also due in part to how hot this fic is!

...I have no idea why I shared this pointless anecdote, it reveals nothing except the fact that I'm a complete dumbass. Whatever. Just go read the fic.

Three Times Alan and Tron Flaunted Their Twincest (and Two Times They Didn't)
Fandom: TRON
Category: Slash
Rating: NC-17/R18./Adult

Alan and Tron. Together. In a relationship. They look exactly the same. Naturally, this freaks people and programs out, because, well, it's kind of incestuous, at least to them. I really like fics that explore the differences between programs and people, whether they be mental or physiological, and this delves into both. It's also charmingly amusing, with a very well-written circuit-sex scene, Zuse being a creeper, and Gem as a slash fangirl (which was probably my favorite part of the story).

I Trust You
Fandom: Futurama
Category: Implied slash
Rating: Indeterminate (see explanation for notes on why)
Notes: Implied non-con

This fic is very short, and very disturbing. It's why I couldn't decide on what rating to label it as- the author used the K+ rating on FFnet, which is equivalent to a PG rating. Uh... I disagree, and if you read it, you'll probably see why. It's not explicit in any way, but the sheer psychological shock you get at the end is so jarring (and will probably haunt my dreams for years to come). Don't get me wrong, it's brilliant, otherwise I wouldn't be reccing it, but it's just so soul-shatteringly brutal, although not detailed, that I feel that I should just give potential readers a heads-up in case this kind of thing is a squick for them. All I'm going to say is- poor Fry.

Multi-Chapter Fics:
Progress
Fandom: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Category: Het
Rating: PG-13
Completion Status: 14 chapters, in progress

Don't be turned off by the category on this story- despite it containing romantic relationships between ponies, it's really not all that extreme, and the ponies who are together are original characters, as well as a slight hinting towards Princess Luna/Big Macintosh. While normally I wouldn't touch something that shipped the ponies, the romance is nowhere near the focus of this story. That would be Princess Luna's attempts to reintegrate into modern pony society. Featuring Luna's phobia of baseballs, trying to deal with the way that social mores have changed in the thousand years she had spent locked away in the moon. It's quite entertaining, with just enough mature humor to make it unpredictable without feeling sketchy.

As Morning Shows The Day
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Category: Gen/pre-slash
Rating: PG-13
Completion Status: 23 chapters, in progress

It's no secret that I love me some kid!fic. Maybe it's because I'm probably destined to be the angry old lady with 99 cats, but there's something about these kinds of stories that I find absolutely adorable. And this serves up adorableness by the bucketfull. An accident with alien technology leads to Spock being de-aged to a five-year-old, with random rapid bursts of aging when he feels happiness. The updating schedule for this story seems to be a bit unique- it's been going since early 2009 and last updated in October of 2010, so I'm hoping that it's not discontinued, that would be very disappointing, as it's a great story.

The Incredible Flutterhulk
Fandom: Crossover between the Incredible Hulk and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Category: Gen
Rating: PG/PG-13
Completion Status: 2 chapters, in progress

I usually don't rec multi-chapter fics under five chapters that are incomplete so far, but this one was too good to pass up. I'll admit, at first I was skeptical- the two concepts just didn't seem to really be able to mesh, and while crack crossovers are fun, they at least need to be able to be put together in a somewhat cohesive manner. This one actually manages to do that, while blending something as random as the Incredible Hulk and MLP. In case you can't tell from the title, Fluttershy is the one who becomes the Incredible Flutterhulk; after accidentally finding herself in the midst of a patch of something related to the Poison Joak- Gamma Joak. This results in her becoming the Incredibly Flutterhulk. At only two chapters so far, this managed to really get me sucked into the story, so go check it out.

Captured
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Category: Slash
Rating: NC-17/R18/Adult
Completion Status: 4 chapters, complete
Notes: Could possibly be read as dub-con

This is probably one of the more explicit fics I've ever read, right up there with Juicy, which I recced in April. And when I say this fic is dirty, I mean it- there's near constant sex. As far as fanfiction goes, it's about as NSFW as you can possibly get (which didn't stop me from reading it on my break at work, but whatever, it was on my phone, not the company computer). There's really not enough plot to give it a proper summary, so I'll just quote what the author used as their summary: “Spock tops Kirk. The end.” And while the writer intended it to be read as consensual, it is possible to read it as dubious consent, which some people apparently did, so keep that in mind.

Malfoy Child
Fandom: Harry Potter
Category: Pre-slash
Rating: PG-13
Completion Status: 21 chapters, complete

D'awwwwww. That's all I have to say about this fic. It's just epic cuteness. Draco gets turned into a four-year-old thanks to a potions accident, and Harry ends up taking care of him, leading to lots of very adorable parent-child intereactions. While it's a plot point in the story that Harry has feelings for the grown Draco, there's nothing sketchy here- the relationship between the de-aged Draco and Harry is purely parent-child. And it's adorable. It seems lately I've been on a big kid!fic kick, but at the same time, it seems like a lot of my relatives and friends are having babies, maybe that's why.

Yo.

OK, so if you're here you've either found this through my personal blog or my writing journal. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with this account yet, since I have a writing journal and a personal blog already, but since LJ has been so buggy because of the DDoS attacks I might just back stuff up here for now.

Eh, I don't know, I'm sure I'll figure something out.
